This right here is my childhood memory. 🙂 This is a Romanian dessert, that our mothers and grandmothers used to make at home. It’s not so healthy, that’s why it’s a treat, not a snack, but it’s delicious. I always loved this chocolate bar, it reminds me of my childhood years. 🙂 The ingredients are just a few and with a few steps, you too can make this.Romanian Homemade Chocolate BarsIngredients:
  • 150 g of brown sugar
  • 120 ml water
  • 100 g of room temperature butter
  • 300 g of powdered milk (not the one for babies)
  • 100 g of cacao powder
  • nuts (optional), I used hazelnuts
  • raisins (optional), I used some raisins soaked in Amaretto

Romanian Homemade Chocolate BarsMeasure every ingredient to have them ready, because you have to move quite fast with this chocolate because it hardens. Mix the powdered milk and cacao powder together.

In a medium pot add the water and sugar. Put the pot on the stove and cook the syrup for 10 minutes (count 10 minutes when it starts boiling) on medium-low heat, stirring constantly. You will see that it forms a syrup.

Take the pot off the heat and add the butter. Stir until it’s completely melted.

Add the cacao and milk mixture and stir until everything is combined and you can’t see any traces of milk.

Romanian Homemade Chocolate BarsIt should form a dough. Move this dough to a baking sheet (15×23 cm) lined with cling film and level it nicely with your hands or a wooden spoon. Add more hazelnuts on top if you want.

Romanian Homemade Chocolate BarsLet it sit at room temperature for at least 2 hours, until it cools down completely. Then you can take out the chocolate from the baking sheet, and cut it into the shapes you desire and like.

You can keep this chocolate in an airtight container for 2 weeks, but it will last that long??
