Savory French Toast

If you are a fan of french toast, you will love this savory one. It’s perfect when you don’t want to have a sweet breakfast and want to try something else.

In Romania, people make these savory toasts all the time. They are nothing fancy, just a normal breakfast idea. Normally, french toast is seen as something more elegant. It’s not the case with these toasts.

Savory french toasts are my husband’s favorites. He could eat these all the time. He’s obsessed with these. And I try to make them as often as he wants. To make savory french toast you need just a few things.

Ingredients:

  • crusty bread
  • eggs
  • salt and pepper
  • dried vegetables, dried bouillon to taste (optional)

We need a more crusty bread, to hold its shape when we fry it. If you use sandwich bread, it will soak up all the eggs and will become mushy.

Cut the bread into thick slices and set aside.

Into a bowl, beat the eggs. For the slices you see in the picture, I used 2 eggs and it was enough. Add the salt, pepper, and the dried vegetables, if you have and whisk with a fork.

Add the slices of bread in 2-3 batches into the eggs and let them soak the egg for a few seconds. Turn them on the other side and do the same.

Heat a skillet with a few tablespoons of grapeseed oil. When it’s hot, add slices of bread to fry. Make this step in a few batches, or if you have a big skillet, just in one batch.

Fry the bread on both sides on medium-high heat and then, add them to a plate lined with paper towel.

Serve hot.
